How do you promote wellness and good health beyond the usual emphasis on physical health and from a group rather than individual focus?  How many of us accomplish our goals entirely on our own? Where do we learn to resolve conflict, deal with stress or support a distressed colleague with care and compassion without enabling debilitating behavior?

My work with Social Media Technologies in Prevention and Learning Chi is about learning resulting in living a connected, engaged and energized life so it makes perfect sense to learn more about the work and perspective of Dr. Joel Bennett, author, researcher and consultant.

Joel's work focuses on employee well-being, organizational health and stress, workplace culture and employee training.  He has worked in the healthcare industry, hosptality industry, with federal and local government agencies as well as community and academic organizations.  I asked Joel to join me for this podcast to talk about his initial substance abuse prevention work on Team Awareness, an NREPP recognized prevention program.  He offers research insights and thinks out-loud about the ways and methods involved in the program that have allowed it to be adapted successfully to organizations across the spectrum.  He describes how the approach creates much deeper change in organizations, well beyond substance abuse (although that outcomes remains consistent).

His stories, insights and discussion of challenges is engaging and he offers a variety or tools and resources via the website, Organizational Wellness.  Joel does a significant amount of training including a new online training in Team Awareness.  For more information visit the website or phone 817-921-4260. You can also find Joel on Facebook hosting the We in Wellness Cause.

This first AAPS KPN podcast features Kathy Perron, AAPS along with LaDonna Coy, Partner and KPN Steward describing the new forms of AAPS online support for the KPN Collaboratory. KPN Stewards formerly committed to the SPF SIG project, have shifted over to the KPN.  Along with Jami Jones from KUWG they are developing a "new skin for the KPN", a re-design of the Collaboratory space to make it more user-friendly, functional and inviting. The first stage reveal and input for additional changes is scheduled for the first week in October.  Additional supports include:

  • Weekly TA calls (Tuesday's from 10-11 a.m.) with Jami Jones from KUWG to support and assist KPN members with all things ODSS as well as any Workstation development.
  • Monthly online learning sessions will be hosted by the Community Technology Stewards. These are scheduled for the third Friday of each month from 1:00-2:30 pm. The first session on 9/17 is an Introduction to Twitter.  The last Friday session of each quarter is set aside for a KPN Sharefest.  These informal sessions are for sharing projects-in-process and those completed to be celebrated; ideas for projects you would like to discuss or have input from the Network; anything you'd like to bring to your colleagues.
  • Finally, LaDonna and the Stewards are co-hosting Virtual Office Hours twice monthly on the 2nd and 4th Friday's from 9-11 a.m. in an Elluminate room.  This is a time for follow up support to monthly sessions topics or to work on projects you may have going on.

Everything will be posted, announced and discussed together on the Collaboratory.  Welcome to the Collaboratory, let's see what we can create together.
